The reason I love the photos as much as I do is because they captured both of my children at that specific age and in their moments. -Kaitie M.
I remember hot summer days of riding my bike down the grassy hill into my yard. Did I go faster and farther this time without pedalling? Warm breeze in my hair, my clothes and bare knees covered in dirt; it was time to run next door to Babcia and Dziadziu’s house for an orange Freeze Pop and to beg Babcia for another swim lesson at the neighbor’s.
Nightly family Rummy games on the living room floor, playing for pennies and bragging rights.
I remember getting off the bus and trudging up the driveway, bundled up in boots and neon winter jacket, bright red cheeks and nose peeking out from a scarf and hat. Jonathon jumps out from behind a snow bank, tackles me, and smooshes my face in the snow. He, as my big brother, was the only one who could do that. At least that’s what he says as he threatens the neighbor boy for throwing pebbles at me.
Sunday mornings and a dozen Dunkin Donuts always on the counter.
These are my childhood memories. Some exciting and some quiet. Some are traditions, some fleeting moments. Always, always, always surrounding the love of my family. What I wouldn’t give to have images, just to remind me of how simple and fun and loving life was with my family then – the people who have shaped and guided me to who I am today.
Childhood is about running, and skipping and jumping and allowing your imagination to transform an empty box into a spaceship bound for far off planets where the inhabitants have blue fur spotted like leopards and love to give hugs. Photographing a session when it’s about playing and being together allows the images to show more genuine reactions, personalities and expressions. Your body language will relax and that beautiful smile will be because Mason told one of his goofy jokes – not because you said “cheese.”
If you feel that your hair needs to be perfect, your husband’s shirt needs to be tucked in and your kids need to follow strict instructions quietly while you all smile at the camera, then this may not be right for you. But if you are ready to play, laugh and get a little dirty, then together we can create some beautiful interactive images: a tangible reminder for your children and grandchildren that they are loved and life is sweet.
